{"id":105,"date":"2009-10-13T09:41:59","date_gmt":"2009-10-12T23:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whs1969.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/?p=105"},"modified":"2009-10-13T09:41:59","modified_gmt":"2009-10-12T23:41:59","slug":"what-went-on-whilst-we-were-inside-the-hall-enjoying-our-school-socials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whs1969.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/2009\/10\/13\/what-went-on-whilst-we-were-inside-the-hall-enjoying-our-school-socials\/","title":{"rendered":"What went on whilst we were inside the hall enjoying our school socials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi,<\/p>\n<p>My Father Stan Crook wrote the following little note because he though it was time to let everyone know about where <strong>the real action was<\/strong> during our school social nights \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it seems it was outside.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote &#8211; \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcDuring our time at Watson High a very popular &amp; enjoyable activity was the social evening &amp; dance.\u00c2\u00a0 Similar activities at other Canberra District High Schools were also enjoyed until a large gang of undesirables including some \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bikies\u00e2\u20ac\u009d decided to gate crash &amp; disrupt these activities to the extent that other schools stopped having them.\u00c2\u00a0 The invasions were quite serious \u00e2\u20ac\u201c even a fire was started at one of the schools.\u00c2\u00a0 The parents of Watson decided we would not be forced to abandon our dances. \u00c2\u00a0We could get little help from the police so some of our male parents decided to form a vigilante group.\u00c2\u00a0 The group consisted mainly of serving military men among them being Cec Chalker (Yolanda\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s father) Wally Wark (Faye\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s father) &amp; my Dad (Stan Crook).\u00c2\u00a0 They armed themselves with baseball bats &amp; some short lengths of chain to disable \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbikies\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bikes.\u00c2\u00a0 They also patrolled the school grounds while we enjoyed ourselves.\u00c2\u00a0 The news of the vigilante group spread far &amp; wide &amp; we never had any real problems.<\/p>\n<p>My Dad is 86 now &amp; fortunately he is still able to tell a tale or two.\u00c2\u00a0 He always attended &amp; assisted with our netball &amp; softball &amp; has spent untold hours coaching &amp; encouraging our three children to enjoy sport &amp; be good sportsmen.\u00c2\u00a0 I have attached a recent photo of him at our daughter&#8217;s wedding last November.<\/p>\n<p>Looking forward to catching up with everyone in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Kind Regards<\/p>\n<p>Pamela Bourke (Crook)<\/p>\n<p>PS Many of our parents did a lot for us at the school that we probably didn&#8217;t appreciate (canteen, school fetes, P &amp; C, sports coaching). Thanks, Mums and Dads!<\/p>\n<p>PPS Does anyone else have memories of the school socials? My main memory is of doing the Canadian Threestep (with really big steps) and the Pride of Erin (just like they did in the 19th century!) Also the progressive barn dance.\u00c2\u00a0 And of course, the Ladies&#8217; Choice!! Did we ever get a chance to dance just to rock and roll type music?? I can&#8217;t remember.
