Musicals, 1967 – 1969
During our time at Watson High, three major musical productions were staged . They were “Brigadoon” in 1967, “Calamity Jane” in 1968 and “No No Nanette” in 1969. The first two of these were performed in the Dickson High School Hall, as Watson’s school hall was only completed in 1969 (just in time for the HSC!) Teachers and students spent many hours rehearsing, after school, in the evenings and on weekends. Each production was performed on three or four nights to an appreciative audience of family and friends.
Students from our year and the years below us performed on stage and worked backstage on these productions, as you can see from the programmes below. They formed part of the orchestra in “No No Nanette” too. Thanks go to the dedicated teachers who made these productions happen – extra-curricular activities like these are often the highlights and provide some of the best memories of our school years, rather than the day-to-day school routine.
An interesting piece of trivia is that one of the main characters in “Brigadoon” is called Harry Beaton. In Watson’s production in 1967 he was renamed Harry Ritchie, as Mr Beatton was our Deputy Principal at the time.
Unfortunately we only have a few photos of these productions – please send in any that you may have to add to this collection.
